We certainly have heard enough talk about money and the economy over the last six months. From the Internet to our local coffee shops, churches and ministries, everyone is talking about money. But Someone else has a lot to say about money. God does.
Larry Burkett used to say that over 1,000 verses in the Bible talk about money. Howard Dayton says that 2,350 verses in the Bible talk about money and possessions. When we realize that there are only about 31,000 total verses in the Bible, we quickly come to the conclusion that there are a lot of verses about money and possessions.
In addition to the amount of verses that talk about money, over 1/2 of all parables talk about money and possessions. I have heard it said that there are more verses in the Bible on money than on heaven and hell combined.
I know that in my life, I tend to get hung up on statistics and information like this. We must realize the Bible has a much greater message than how we should handle our money. The Bible is God's Gospel to His people and it should be the believers guide for all areas of our lives (2 Timothy 3:16) not just our finances.
So, although it would be wrong to say that money is the Scripture’s primary concern, we cannot deny the fact that a lot of attention is paid to it. I have often wondered why this is the case.
Before I offer my thoughts on why God has devoted so much of His Word to money and possessions, I would like to hear your thoughts on this. Why are there so many verses in the Bible about money and possessions? Click on the "Comments" button below and take just a few minutes to let others see your thoughts on this question. I, and the others who visit this blog, would really appreciate it.
